 Celebrating the Holidays, MSMAP-style

The holidays are getting underway at the Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program with their 6th Open House and Holiday Food Drive, scheduled for December 12 from 4:30 to 6:30pm at their studio at 612 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd.

The annual event includes demonstrations by local children, teens, and adults; raffle drawings for several prizes — including adult ski day passes and more — donated by local businesses; and, a food drive benefitting the Senior Nutrition Program.

“This event began as a simple housewarming party in 2008 and is now our holiday tradition,” said MSMAP executive director and head instructor Chuck Buhs. “We greatly appreciate all the support we receive from local businesses and the rest of our community for this event. It gives us the opportunity to share all our holiday energy with martial arts action, lots of gifts, and much needed food for seniors.”

 The Gift of Food

District Administrator Mike Rodriguez notes “these food donations make a real difference in the lives of our seniors, many who are stretching every available dollar. A good number of our homebound seniors must survive on very limited monthly incomes, $800 or less. Just paying their monthly rent, utilities, and out-of-pocket medical expenses virtually depletes their funds to the point of making grocery shopping a real hardship. A simple bag full of soup or other food items is a welcome gift and a blessing.”

 Action & Prizes

According to Buhs, “The demonstrations are promising plenty of high-level action including the Korean self-defense style of yongmudo. We have several kids with 3, 4, 5 years of training under their belts and ready to jump higher, kick faster, and show more advanced skills. These are very impressive and talented kids. In fact, Vitaliy Tveritin is getting ready for his junior black belt exam next May at U.C. Berkeley.”

“This my fourth open house and it’s really awesome,” said Vitaliy, 12. “It’s a chance for all of us to show our skill in front of an audience. In my experience, having a crowd cheer you on is very inspiring and helps build confidence. Preparing for this event allows me to practice a lot with the group. And, this group provides me with the support I need to get ready for my exam.”

Raffle prizes are contributed by the Mt. shasta Ski Park, the Siskiyou Ice Rink, Andaman Healthy Thai Cuisene, Shasta Base Camp, Sereni-Tea, and many other local businesses.

Raffle tickets are $2 each and are available at 612-A S. Mt. Shasta Blvd., email (info@MtShastaMA.org) or telephone (859-2024). A complete list of raffle prizes is online at www.MtShastaMA.org .
